America Has More Guns Than People

Christopher Ingraham: “A 2012 Congressional Research Service report published exactly one month before the Sandy Hook school shooting put the number of civilian firearms at 242 million in 1996, 259 million in 2000, and 310 million as of 2009.”

“If that 310 million number is correct, it means that the first year of Barack Obama’s presidency was an inflection point: It marked the first time that the number of firearms in circulation surpassed the total U.S. population.”

“Data on gun manufacturing from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives now goes through 2013. If we were to update the CRS numbers with the most recent data, we’d get a chart that looks something like this:”

“Regardless of the actual number of civilian firearms in circulation, there’s no ambiguity around one crucial fact: U.S. gun manufacturers have drastically increased their output during the Obama years. In 2009, according to the ATF, gunmakers produced 5.6 million guns. By 2013 their annual production had just about doubled, up to 10.9 million guns that year.”

Look at all the paranoia that’s attended Obama’s Presidency, which Fox News and others have whipped into a frenzy.

Of course that led to people buying up all the guns in sight. To hold off government death squads or angry mobs of blacks and Mexicans. Or gays, maybe.

Lots more guns, but heavily concentrated in a relatively small part of the population.

More guns than people in America? Is this a great country, or what?

Studies have shown that roughly 2/3 of households have 0 guns, which means all of those guns are owned by 1/3 of households. That averages to 3 guns/household. I’m not sure how well it’s been studied, but I’m confident that a substantial proportion of households with guns have only 1. That means that there are quite a few who have 6 or more, like the Oregon shooter who had 13 or 14. Given that we have 2 hands, I would like to know what purpose is served by having that many guns.

Your math is off a bit in the middle. In 2014 there were about 120 million households. 1/3rd of that is 40 million and they have the 360 million guns. If half have one gun then you get 340 million guns in 20 million households or 17 per household. There aren’t just a few wackos out there but millions of them. I suppose some people collect them like beanie babies but some clearly think they need all of them for protection.

I stand corrected and your are right. I wonder if they have 8 hands like the Indian godess and can fire all those guns at once. 1 or 2 are for hunting and self protection, 17 are a fetish.

Think of the scene in The Matrix, where Neo and Trinity are off to rescue Morpheus from the agents. They don’t waste time reloading, they just drop their empty gun and pull out a new one, already loaded. Same principle.

          • RadicalCentrist

That seems like something that the average gun owner would encounter frequently.

I’m more concerned that they’re not practicing their wire-fu with as much zeal as they collect firearms. At this rate, they’ll barely be able to run up one wall and do a backflip when the ATF agents come for them after the New World Order is established.

That’s funny, until you remember what movie those kids were watching just before they did the Columbine shooting.

  • gjetsonpdx

So much for the transparently false argument that even more guns are the solution to mass shootings.

  • Ugothniwl

all the number published are wrong……about 80% of homes have a gun…gene if it is just a rusty old shot gun.

      And you know this how?
