I’m sad that my home state of VT has been edged out by NH as the least religious. We can fix that. 😉

    The state of sanity?

    • pisher

Yeah, I think the 20th Century might have a few bones to pick with that.

      Stalin. Mao. Pol Pot.

Gandhi. Martin Luther King Jr. Pope John XXIII.

Judge people by their actions, not by what they believe or disbelieve.

      That’s what sanity looks like.

      • dylan111

False analogy. The first three men were all heads of state. The second three, all forces for good, were either political and/or spirtual leaders but never ruled a country.

        • pisher

Gandhi was the most powerful man in India for the latter part of his life.

MLK has a national holiday named after him–Washington and Lincoln have to share one.

Vatican City is technically a state, and the Pope its temporal ruler, as well as the spiritual leader of over a billion people around the world.

Stalin was the end result of an deeply atheistic ideology created by Karl Marx, who was never the leader of anything. And no, he would not have approved of much of what Stalin (or even Lenin) did, but you can’t say that Marxism isn’t an atheist, materialistic belief system, that at least aspires to be scientific.

Mao and Pol Pot also were influenced by Marx, and by other atheist thinkers.

Atheism does not make you good or bad, smart or dumb, creative or destructive. As with theism, what matters is the personality behind the beliefs, much more than the beliefs themselves. Power is inherently corrupting, no matter who holds it, which is why we believe, as Americans, that it’s a mistake to divide people up on the basis of race, nationality, or creed.

So let’s not do that, okay? Some of the most brilliant insightful and decent people alive are deeply religious. You don’t get to dismiss them because they believe things that can’t be proven. So do you. So does everybody.

And, if they ruled a country they would have killed like mao and stalin? Is that your inane assertion?

  • drzaius

Its funny Alabama and Mississippi are always number one and number two and everything you don’t want and number 49 and 50 in everything you do want. Coincidence?

    • pisher

Mississippi did give us blues music. And there were good reasons for that.

And it’s #1 in terms of the percentage of black people living there (bit over 37%), not that you meant that was something you didn’t want, but we do tend to forget little fine details like that when thinking about the south.

    • bpai99

No coincidence whatsoever. The stupider and less educated people tend to be more religious, eat less healthy, be more bigoted and less accepting of change.

      • pisher

Yeah, that wasn’t bigoted at all.

New Hampshire is everything you want? Take it then
